Based on the proposed list of FCH Product Categories (see Newsletter 1), three product (sub-)categories have been selected and subjected to a screening PEF study to guide the drafting of the corresponding PEF Category Rules.
Welcome to HyPEF! We will deliver and test the FIRST EVER Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCRs) for fuel cells and hydrogen (FCH) products.

- As regards hydrogen production, the Product Sub-Category “Electrochemical devices” (i.e. electrolysers) has been selected. The representative product consists of a mixture of alkaline, proton-exchange membrane and solid oxide electrolysers of 1 MW. The electrolysers will operate on electricity from renewables. - For hydrogen storage, the Product Sub-Category “Tanks for compressed hydrogen storage for heavy-duty mobility” has been selected. The representative product consists of a type IV tank.
- For hydrogen use, the Product Category “Fuel cells for electricity production” has been selected. The representative product consists of fuel cell modules with a capacity of 100 kWel, mostly of proton-exchange membrane type with a little share of solid oxide fuel cells.
As part of the PEF studies, major environmental hotspots, most relevant processes and life cycle stages as well as additional technical and environmental information have been identified for each product (sub-)category, amongst other things. The insights will inform the drafting of specific rules on how to conduct LCA according to the PEF methodology for the involved product categories (so-called PEFCRs). These will be tested in case studies starting in September 2025.
